Obstetrics: first antenatal visit
The first antenatal consultation is an important part of your care. It sets us up to go on the journey together and it defines the way we look after you as a team, for the rest of your pregnancy.
In a first consultation, I go over a thorough assessment of your health, including your current and any past pregnancies. What we want to do is exclude or identify any risk factors. If we do come across any risk factors, we can initiate appropriate intervention and make a plan to monitor your pregnancy closely.
Your typical first antenatal visit takes longer than the subsequent visits. We have a lot to go through: your detailed health history, a physical examination, an ultrasound, and the referrals for your routine blood and urine tests.
For your first consultation, please bring:
- Copies of your blood tests
- Copies of urine tests
- Recent ultrasounds
- Letters from other specialists about any health condition you may have

Obstetrics: about health funds
It is worth noting that when you are expecting a baby, your health fund situation may need attention.
If you are currently covered by singles health insurance, you may want to consider a transfer to family cover at least three months before your expected delivery date. The majority of health funds do not automatically cover your baby if you need neonatal care, unless your family cover has been in place for at least three months.
If you elect to remain on singles cover and your baby is unwell and requires admission to our Special Care Nursery, you will be required to settle the baby’s account on discharge from the hospital.
If you are expecting a multiple birth, family health insurance is highly advisable. Singles health insurance will only cover one baby during your hospital stay.
Please note that I do not charge any gap fees to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients in my practice. Based on our commitment to closing the gap in indigenous health outcomes in Australia, our practice has implemented this initiative. Obstetrics: subsequent visits
The subsequent visits of your antenatal care normally take about half an hour. We go over a few standard checks:
- Recent history: how your pregnancy is going, any symptoms or discomforts, your general mood and general health
- Weight check
- Physical examination
- Ultrasound
If you have questions, it may be useful to list them prior to your antenatal visit so that we can cover them and you have peace-of-mind when you leave.

Gynaecology consults: what to expect?
If you are attending my practice for a gynaecology consult, we want to maximise our time together to talk about your symptoms or the management and treatment of your condition.
A typical consult includes a detailed history conversation. I usually perform a gynaecological examination with a vaginal speculum. After that, I make recommendations for further tests, including ultrasounds, blood and/or urine tests.
First consultation fees are $300, out of which you would get $81.30 back from Medicare.
Subsequent consultations are $150, out of which you get $40.85 back from Medicare.
Health funds do not cover consultation fees. Depending on your cover, the Health Fund will cover part of your procedure that is performed at the hospital.

Gynaecology consults: do I need a referral?
The short answer is yes.
For gynaecology consultations in Westmead and Sydney (St George Private Hospital), ask your GP for a referral to Dr Anu Mahadik.
For your initial obstetrics consultation and the start of your antenatal care, ask your GP for a referral to my practice.
